The First Night in India

The first hotel “Master Guest House” is AMAZING! It has well decorated and extremely clean rooms that have been placed around either an open terrace or a communal living room area. The rooms have large, extremely comfortable beds and bathrooms attached (well mine did!).

When I arrived I was told to rest in the communal room and dining area. I had a quick tidy up in the washroom and read the ‘Hindustan Times’…then I fell asleep 🙂

Once the room was ready, I was told to go up and rest and speak with the owner later. I fell into what felt like the best sleep ever. I didn’t get up until 2pm! After freshening up and tipping all of my belongings on the bed, as is customary when you reach a new hotel, I went downstairs to meet people.

A huge breakfast was presented and a very warm welcome too. There was a map of the local area and a solid explanation of what to do in New Delhi. I felt happy about my first views of India. Seated at the table, eating breakfast, I was joined by a couple: Elizabeth and Mark. They had just come back from Varanasi and had a lot of stories to tell. They were American, from Baltimore and had been on a weeks visit to India.
Along with the hotel owner, we talked for ages about India. The owner explained that wherever we go we will consider it the ‘Real India’ and in a way it is: Every person will take away a differing view of what they have seen. The ‘Real’ India is different to everyone!

That evening I decided to look around the area, so I walked up the road and towards a place called Connaught Place, where, apparently the young folk hang out! It was busy and full of auto rickshaws, so when it came to come home the method had already been decided! Well what can I say about this experience? It was hectic! The cars drive wherever that choose, regardless of whether there is anyone already in that space. They are opportunistic, filling in the smallest gaps! It was quite exciting…
