India: Slumming it

Unfortunately the first hotel was only booked for one night. As they were all booked up, I had to move on to a new hotel. I was incredibly sad about this, as it was such a welcoming place, with happy friendly staff who are really willing to help.

The morning I was due to leave, I began to feel a little worse for wear. I had taken my Malaria tablet on an empty stomach, which is not good. As I’d vacated the room, they put up a little bed for me in their study area and let me have a lay down for an hour while my travel companions located a new place to stay.
I woke up an hour later, fully functioning and reasonably revitalized, ready for the afternoon ahead! When I got to the new hotel and was shown the cell of a room that had been booked, I was slightly deflated, but what do you do in a hotel room when you’re travelling…you pretty much just sleep there!

That afternoon I decided to try and find ‘Jantar Mantar’ (which is Hindi for ‘Abracadabra’), an open air observatory from the days of yore! I never actually made it, as I went for a detour and then a very annoying man on the street persuaded me to go to the ‘Tourist Office’. Ha, Tourist Office!more like press gang! I was in there for AGES! They tried to get me to go on their tour, however, I do now have a good idea of what to do in which order, so all was not a complete waste of time.

Once I’dd surfaced, I walked down to Connaught Place again and sat on the grass and people watched whilst they gawked at me! I have been covering myself up, so it wasn’t because of flashing too much flesh. I came to the conclusion that it’s my hair and have since begun to cover it up with my headscarf!

On the way home I managed to place my foot into a huge pile/puddle of poo/water/mud and get it all over me! A lovely man on an auto rickshaw helped me by pouring a load of water over my feet to help me wash it all off! I quickly walked back to the hotel and changed before venturing out for dinner ๐Ÿ™‚

Here you will see an image of taps and a bucket…this is what you get for a shower!

The first hotel had an actual shower, but this is more the norm (apparently), with a bucket for you to sluce the water over yourself with. I’m sure I’ll become a dab hand at it in no time!
