India: Varkala

I got up early and walked to the bus stop with my bags, along two beaches and up a hill! When I got to the bus stop I found that I had missed the direct bus, but that I could get another that would take me almost all of the way (to a place called Kallambalam). It was quite packed, so I ended up with a big Indian lady squashed onto the seat with me. As I couldn’t get my rucksack out from the foot well, I was well and truly wedged in. It was only or an hour, so wasn’t exactly hard.

Once at the almost stop (Kallambalam) I got an auto-rickshaw to take me to the hotel…however he didn’t know where it was…so I took a little longer to get there…and even when I was there and could see it, he still didn’t know where it was! The place that I wanted to stay in is perched on the top of a cliff that looks out over the beach, the rooms are little wooden beach huts with cute verandas and their own sunbeds. However the hotel was too expensive for me. FAR too expensive, so I moved down a little and stayed in the almost-as-awesome-but-not-quite ‘Basuri’, which has huge rooms and wicker swinging seats outside on the balcony.

After checking out the beachside restaurants for a spot of breakfast (it was still only 10.30am) I spent the rest of the day on the beach surrounded by dogs and their puppies wanting the shade of the underneath of my sunbed.

I thought I’d try out the free Wi-Fi in one of the beachside restaurants, I was sceptical, but it was amazing! I ended up speaking to Ems (the fantastic) on Skype for a good hour. It was nice to see her and hear her, but bad to hear that my parents had almost been burgled a few days previous: apparently they’d been put off half way through, so didn’t manage to actually get anything

Today I had a beach day…at one point I was literally the only person sunbathing on the beach…infact I think I was the only person on the beach at all.

As I’ve been here for a few days now and not yet ventured out of the security of the beach, I thought I should probably see what was on the other cliff. So after feeling a little burnt and tired from the sun I went for an amble up the cliff and walked miles and miles!

First I got pestered by all of the shop owners and then I carried on walking, over the hill and far away…or not! I found some gorgeous little huts on the next beach over and enquired about renting one for a few nights. The price was ₨850 a night, which I thought was very worthwhile, but seeing as I’d been quite burnt today, it was probably better to have a day off from the sun!

I passed a green temple that seriously looked like something from a Disney movie…I personally thought that it looked like Jasmines Castle (from Aladdin).

As I walked over the cliffs I felt a strange sensation dropping on my head. At first I thought it was a coconut falling, but then I realised, when I saw my hairclip on the floor, a bird had tried to steal it!

Whilst walking back through the nightly blackout, I stopped an ate food in a really nice restaurant. It had cocktails and I made the mistake of having two. Now anyone who knows me well will know that I’m a bit of a lightweight at the best of times, least not when I’m not really eating much and getting too much sun…I ended up being a little bit of a handful.

Later on, in the evening, after it had got very dark indeed I settled down to a long internet session to my mum and dad…it is nice to know that everyone at home in good and well!
