I set of to go to Kollam, but ended up going to Alleppey!
Basically I got the train to Kollum and once I was there tried to find a hotel. The first one I tried had the owner standing in the doorway shaking his head at me. It was only when he moved to one side and a group of men bought out a stretcher covered with a sheet that I realized that someone had died. Needless to say I moved on.
Unfortunately I was out of luck, as every single one of the three other places that I tried was full. I took the executive decision to go somewhere else: Alleppey! Getting there was hard work though. I got a train from Kollam to somewhere in the middle of nowhere due to some language issues. I should have been able to wait at Kollam for a few hours and get a direct train, but the ticket man didn’t have a clue what I was asking! Luckily when I got to the halfway train station there was a train leaving straight away to Alleppey, so I was okay, but it was touch and go for a little while.
After many, many trains I went straight to a hotel that had been recommended to me, unfortunately it was fully booked, but they took me to somewhere I could stay for one night until there was space at their place. The place that I was taken to involved me going through a building site, nicer than it sounds. I figure that they’re just doing it up in the ‘off-season’ so that when the swarms of tourists come in the high season their place will look amazing.
Anyways the room was okay, had two beds and a bathroom so I wasn’t fussed about the site. I did have to administer plenty of deet and mosquito plug-in though…as there were MILLIONS of the little buggers!
