India: Kannur

Sunday

After an eventful bus ride (We got a puncture and had the bus with the smallest amount of leg room I have ever seen) I arrived in Kannur. The first hotel that I tried was unfortunately full, so I had a LONG walk along the road to try and find other places to stay. I was out of luck and after walking for about 40 minutes I found nothing.

Taking the first chance that I had to get onto the beach, I found that there were no beach hotels, or anything else for that matter, just the beach (which would have been lovely…but I really just wanted somewhere to stay). I promptly decided to head in towards the town centre and look at hotels there. Again I was out of luck, both of the two hotels that I looked at were disgusting! Now I know that I am very picky, but I’m sorry, I will not risk getting Bed Bugs. I have heard that they are an absolute bugger to get rid of, and I for one do not want to be soaking all my luggage in boiling water just because I stayed in a rank hotel!

Okay, my rant is over now and I shall get onto telling you about the gorgeous hotel that I found: Costa Malabari.

I decided to stay in Kannur, but found that the cheaper hotels are less than desirable, so made the conscious descision to stay somewhere a little nicer. It’s an old weaving factory (but it really doesn’t look like it) that now has four really lovely rooms to stay in. You get all of your meals included and it really is the sort of place where you need to just chill out and relax! There is a little beach nearby and it is very secluded, you have to walk past a few houses to get to it, but you wouldn’t know there were any houses there unless you saw them, as everywhere is densely surrounded by Palm Trees and other lovely foliage.

Monday

Today I woke up late and ate toast and then ventured down to the beach!

It is really secluded and I had to walk through a long stretch of palm trees and over a sort of river/inlet bit of sea…sort of like the backwaters, but only just beginning!

Once on the beach I realised why people had recommended it, it’s almost abandoned and there were about five other people on the beach. I walked up and then decided to come back and have a sit.

I went back to the Guesthouse for lunch, however, I was feeling a little rough.

There were some sudden rain showers and I was put off of the idea of going back to the beach, so asked for a taxi to go into the city. The owner of the guesthouse called me a taxi and they took me to see some weaving and then on to the Old Fort…both were amazing. The weaving place was really busy, with the hum of the bobbins going back and forward every second and the bang of the foot pedals hitting the floor.
