India: Arriving in Mysore

At 2.00pm I got on a Karnataka government bus in Kannur, and it took a fantastic six hours to get me to Mysore. It was a very bumpy and jarring journey, with plenty of moments where I was launched from my seat and up into the air. It was probably equal to the journey to Bundi in bounciness! As the bus drove from Kannur to Mysore it drove up hills and through towns, but the best part was driving through the jungle and into the mist! It was really impressive, the bus actually drove through the mist and out the other side.

I took an auto-rickshaw to one of the hotels in my Lonely Planet guide, which was ₨1050, so a little expensive for me really, but I’ll try to find another cheaper hotel tomorrow. It’s called ‘Hotel Mayura Hoysala’ and it’s like a big, old house. I think maybe once it was.

The room has a medium sized main section and a large bathroom with a western toilet and a squat toilet – and six buckets! Now I could understand if there were two: one large and one small, but six, surely that is just excessive, do you need one for each limb?!

The room is fairly nice, it does smell a bit though, I’m not really sure what the smell is, is sort of a mix between mango and air freshener. It’s not too bad for five minutes, but after a while it’s a little bit overpowering.

Apparently there are a lot of interesting things to do in Mysore. When I read about it in the travel guide, I got the impression that it was a small place. I was very wrong, it’s HUGE! I am quite looking forward to seeing the Maharajahs Palace; it looks really pretty.
