India: Sightseeing Goa, Day 1

Today I first took an Auto-Rickshaw into Palolem in order to pick up a moped, before doing so I tried out the Bruschetta in one of the many eateries along the road leading up to the main beach. It was really lovely, quite spicy and delicious!

Once I left Palolem I drove around for a fair few kilometres trying to find a fuel station;

they are really spaced out around Goa. I’m pretty sure that I ended up driving the same piece of road at least three times! I did eventually find a fuel station; it only cost ₨320 to fill the whole tank up. Finally, after all the palaver with fuel, I got on my way and set off north, hoping to hug the coast and find some nice beaches.

The first beach that I came to was Agonda: long, shaded and pleasantly dispersed with very few people. I spent a short while taking photos before moving on up the coast.

Cola Beach was my next stop. I spent a little longer here, getting drawn in by the fact that it had crazy waves as well as a calm freshwater river running into the sea. I reached the beach by taking a bumpy road through the middle of nowhere and then walking down some old stone steps. I reached the bottom and found a few small cafes and bars with accommodation. Beyond this is a lagoon area that leads into the sea, which crashes away the other side of a small sandy headland, sometimes dribbling over into the lagoon.

I threw my things onto a rock and jumped into the lagoon, which had sort of areas of hot and cold water. I ended up lying in a shallow section of the lagoon; it was nice to just lay in the water, letting it cool you as the sun beat down!

When I got bored of the beach I moved on to try and find the Cobo de Rama fort ruins. It was easy to find them, as there are signs for miles. Once there I sat down for a cool drink before venturing into the wilderness that lay beyond. The actual fort really doesn’t have much left of it, most of the brickwork has been left to the plants and trees and you have to look hard to see it. There are two or three little buildings still standing that have weathered a lot better than the rest, these make for amazing photographs.

I didn’t spend long here, there isn’t much to see. The views from the top of the old watchtower are fantastic though, you can see for miles.

I did try next to find Canaguinim Beach, but instead missed the turning and ended up miles further and in the area that I was going to try and explore tomorrow. I took this as a sign that I should head back to Patnem. It was lovely to ride the moped through the jungle, just to see the lovely trees and foliage!

I did try to find Mobor Beach, but by the time I found it I was so tired that I literally had a drink and turned round and went home!
