Today I hired a moped and visited Fort Aguada and some beaches along the coast of Goa.
The first stop, Fort Aguada was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to guard the mouth of the Mandovi River. It used to store water for the ships and was used as a lookout point for the port. Now it is unused, abandoned since 1972. You can go into the fort and walk up and around the ramparts, which is lovely, but the heat is quite unbearable.

Following this I visited Candolim, Calangute and Baga and their beaches. At one of them there is supposed to be a massive tanker that ran aground in the 1990’s, I tried to look for it, but I now think that I was looking in completely the wrong place!
All three beaches were lovely, but very busy. In the Lonely Planet it tells you that they are all places that are frequented by tourists, but they don’t tell you that it is like being in Greece or Spain. The whole place is just full of bars, cheesy shops and general tourist tat. I am very glad that I chose to stay out of the tourist hub and in a place that is just so pretty, with very few people around. I’ve definitely got the good end of the stick being on a long sprawling, empty beach with the only view being the ocean.
