Thailand: One night in Bangkok

OKAY…so it wasn’t really one night, but it sounded better than ‘…one day and two nights in Bangkok…’

Flying from Kathmandu to Bangkok the flight was very easy. I left the city with a lovely friendly taxi driver who took me to Kathmandu Airport and waved me off!

The airport itself is very basic, there are about 20 check-in desks and then once you are through to the Departure Lounge you get a few shops and a cafe. I didn’t have very long to spend there, so just read my book and waited for the time to go by.

On the airplane the flight attendants came round with roasted pumpkin seeds, then drinks and wet wipes. I figured that this meant that there wasn’t a full in-flight meal, however, after this a man came round with rolls and either curry and rice. The food was amazing!

I watched the latest ‘Bourne’ film… I don’t know what the actual name is, it was quite good. I’m not really into those films but they’re something to watch on a long flight, so I was happy.

I soon arrived at Bangkok Airport and went quickly through Passport Control and collected my luggage, heading out towards the airports railway link and the Metro.

As I came out into the Arrivals section of the airport there was a ‘Boots”…a proper one! I was shocked as this was the last thing that I had expected to see! I thought of my Ems and considered that she could transfer to here to be nearer to me if I decided to live this side of the globe ๐Ÿ™‚

The airport rail link and Metro were very easy to use and I was soon out on the street and looking for a Guesthouse. I had to try a few before I found one with any availability: ‘Your Place’ very nice with television and a hot shower (not that I needed anything other than a cold shower by the time I got there).

Dumping my bags, I went out in search for some food and found the best little ‘DIY’ place. They give you a little cooker and you actually cook the food on your table in front of you. I must have looked completely hopeless as I was trying to do everything with chopsticks, which I am no master at using! It was great fun though, it felt a little like being on a camping trip!

I have since found out that this is a very common method of cooking in Asia, to have a little hotplate on your table and you cook the food in the way that you like it.

The next day I went in search of the Bus Station, which I actually found really easily. I bought tickets for the bus to take me across the border into Cambodia in the morning. I was surprised how easy it was to get about and do the things that I wanted. I was expecting to have to work a bit harder at finding information and buying tickets.

Next, I went in search of the Koh San Road, and after a long walk found it and all of its charm! I must say that it has the air of a Club 18-30 holiday, but never mind! I went for food and then ended up in Starbucks!!! So I guess I’m just as bad really…

Eventually I gravitated back to the hotel and had the epic task of packing again…boo hoo. I want to stay here in Bangkok: it has pavements and is really clean and friendly…I didn’t want to leave the little bubble of the modern world!
