As it turns out, you are more likely than usual to get some sort of ailment if you celebrate Songkran in Chiang Mai. This is due to quite a few reasons: least of all alcohol consumption, over-excitement and sheer flow of traffic in and around the ‘moat’ area of the town…of course my ailment had nothing to do with any of these: I contracted an ear infection from all of the pungent moat water that was thrown at me over the three days that I stayed in Chiang Mai…and boy was it a good’un.
All the way from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang (and don’t forget it was a 21 hour seated night bus) I felt as if my brain were about to pop out of my right ear. I did manage, quite early on in the journey to find a very helpful pharmacist who sold me some ear drops and (amazingly strong) Ibuprofen, but I couldn’t really take them until I was lying down.
I spent three days of doing nothing apart from eating before I felt able to go out for a proper amount of time. There is something strange about an ear infection, it’s only your ear, but you feel like your whole body is putting up the fight!
Needless to say it was lovely when I could finally lie on my right side again without fear of the notion of popping my head!
