Laos: Vang Vieng

I spent a few days in the Tubing capital of Laos…and it’s not really that hectic any more. In November the government shut down a lot of the riverside bars and clubs because a lot of tourists were getting very drunk and actually killing themselves doing stupid things.

What is left is only a mere shell of what once was, but I have to say that I actually liked it better than I thought I would. I spent a lazy four hours drifting down the Nam Ou river in tractor/lorry wheel inner tubes (yes really), stopping off at various points to either get a drink or to unhook swimming shorts from the stones and rocks below!!!

The water was very very shallow as it is dry season and so it took a little longer than it should have due to the water not flowing very quickly. They say that in the wet season the river runs so fast that people get swept away! I’m actually glad I’m here in the dry season.

The idea was to go kayaking or something equally as exciting after tubing, but unfortunately my co-traveller got extremely sick and couldn’t do anything for a few days.

He did get better though, and we went to a place called ‘The Blue Lagoon’…it was very pleasant! There is a cave and a lagoon (surprise, surprise). The cave was dark and small! After the cave I spent a little while around the Blue Lagoon, jumping in and swinging in from the trees and tree swings. It was lovely and I don’t think that I have seen water that blue ever!
