Moving to Wellington has been exciting and different to say the least, so when I discovered that there was a Roller Derby League within the city, I was amazingly eager to join in on the fun.
I went along to the ‘Freshmeat and Greet’ and had a bit of a skate around and a chat to the skaters there whilst learning some new tricks: I learnt to knee-slide, to skate in a conga line and to pull/push another skater along.
Following the ‘Freshmeat and Greet’ there was also a ‘Skate Cooperative’ meet where beginners to the sport can get some skills learnt and actually get a feel for how a Roller Derby game is played. The group is made up of beginners and players that are otherwise out of normal meets due to recovering from an injury etc. I really enjoyed meeting lots of new people and having a go at something that I have wanted to try for a long time now. I will certainly be going back next week and venturing out to the matches. They’re at the TSB Arena!
