De Quervain’s Tendosynovitis Release

Today I had my wrist operation. So far, it’s not feeling too bad!

As it all went through the Health Insurance, I got to sample Wakefield Hospital. I was impressed! As you approach you see this really imposing set of gates and a cool old-ish looking building. Upon entering, it really doesn’t feel like a hospital, it feels like a hotel!

The rooms are huge, with a hospital bed, a rocking chair, two armchairs and an ensuite. They’re decorated with paintings of the local area: mine had two small beach-hut style paintings in lovely bright colours. I didn’t write down the artists name, I sort of wish I had now!

My time there actually went really quickly.

I had to be there for 8:30 am, as my surgery was due to take place at 10:00 am. I was shown my room (my private room!) and then a nurse came and explained what was going to happen. At about 9:30, they came to get me ready and then off I went!

The hospital went from Stately-Home to Hospital really quickly as you go up to the surgery space. It goes from carpeted, with pictures on the wall, to clinical and sanitised. Which is a little bit weird!

The Surgeon, Anaesthetist and the Nurse came and asked me a load of questions before going into the theatre. I was a little apprehensive at this point, made a little bit worse when they couldn’t find a vein to put the drip into. They tried possibly three before finding one that worked!
After that I don’t really remember much!

After the surgery I came round in the Recovery section and they gave me an Ice Block, which was lovely. It was noon by this point. I was surprised that I’d been there for so long. After a while, and having a conversation with a few nurses, they let me go back to my own room. I slept mostly for an hour before waking up and getting some of my crossword completed! Ha.

My hand really didn’t feel sore at all. All the numbing that they’d done was clearly very strong stuff as I couldn’t feel my thumb or my index finger, so wasn’t in any pain!

After a while they let me go home and I was still feeling great…and as I write this, it’s 9 pm and I still cant feel my thumb or first two fingers. I’m in no doubt that the pain will kick in at some point, so I have that to look forward to!
