A broken scaphoid

After work yesterday, James and I were about to go for a run when I slipped over and fell on the front deck. My left leg slid out from under me, and my right leg got bent up under me and I cracked my shin on the edge of the step, sort of bouncing and bracing myself with my hands.

I obviously screamed, as it hurt! But I thought if anything was going to be damaged, it would be my right leg…but I got up and I could put weight onto it, so I thought I was probably okay…and off we went for a run!

As the evening went on, my hands begun to hurt a bit more, but I thought nothing of it really, and that I did fall quite hard.

Today, as I woke up, I felt really stiff, but again just put it down to the fall, thinking nothing of it. I struggled through the day at work and it got worse bit by bit.

So after I had made my way home from work, I rung the doctors and they suggested to go down to the Emergency Department (A&E). So off I went.

The ED was quite busy, with a few trauma cases coming in while I was there, but I eventually got seen by the doctor after five hours. Which isn’t really that bad for the ED in Lower Hutt.

The doctor had a quick look and asked about how I did it. She sent me for X-rays and when they came back she explained that it was most likely a scaphoid fracture. She also explained though, that as the bone is teeny tiny, they usually need to look really closely to be certain, and as the doctors in the ED look at a very wide range of ailments all day every day, they want to air on the side of caution and treat as a likely scaphoid fracture.

So off I went to get my wrist cast in a plaster cast…three weeks before our wedding…
