As it’s my birthday in a few days, James bought me a capybara experience at the zoo!
If you don’t know what a capybara is, they’re basically a giant guinea pig. They are the biggest rodent in the world, and they come from South America. Wikipedia has an informative page on them.
Anyway, we went to Wellington Zoo and had a wander round for a few hours before the experience. I love Wellington Zoo, as it’s a really lovely, small zoo, with wide leafy walkways, and enclosures where you can’t always see the animals.

When it came to the capybara experience, I had soooooooo much fun! We met the capybara zookeeper and she told us how the whole thing worked. Then we went into the capybara enclosure!
There were five capybara; one male and four females. The females are typically bigger than the males, although the male is the dominant one in the little zoo pack. In the enclosure, the keeper tells us that it’s not advisable to actually touch them, as they poop in their pool as they swim in it, so they’re pretty dirty. Instead, we are each given a back scratcher and we can scratch them as much as we like with that. THEY LOVED IT.
