Photography: Week 1 & 2

‘Introduction to Digital Photography’ is going well so far. I think.

Week 1

It has been mostly an introduction to online learning, an introduction to the course materials and an introduction to photography so far. All pretty normal for the first course in a programme.

I had to send the tutor an email explaining what kit I had, which I thought was actually quite a good idea. That way they know whether I’m a Canon or Nikon (or something else) photographer, and whether my computer is Windows or Apple.

As part of the weekly studies I have to read the course materials, of which there isn’t much, read the readings, and take photos based on each weeks theme. This week it was very broad.

This week also had me completing an activity where I had to take a range of images, then resize then and use the correct naming convention to save them.

The four photos I had to take this week were:

  • Landscape
  • Portrait
  • Architecture
  • Night

However, I don’t have to submit them until next week.

Week 2

This week was all about exposure. The course materials discuss the basics of aperture, stops, shutter speed, ISO, noise, and light. As I am pretty confident with knowing these basics, I focused on the course readings to help me understand how using each (or combinations of each) help to get better photos.

Discussion Board 1

Here you can see my photo submissions for this week:

  • An architecture shot of the old Dominion Post building with the Majestic Centre in the background, taken in Wellington Central on a cold and windy day!
  • A landscape shot taken on my lunch break at work on a chilly but lovely sunny day.
  • A night photo taken from my deck after a few hours of me stressing about what I could possibly take a photo of at night time that would look good!
  • A portrait of my friend at Wellington Botanic Gardens.

This was, technically, an assessed task. I received an A+
