Motorbike Test: Take III

Today I took my bike test for the third time. I failed. Again.

Test No.3 was terrible; I failed quite majestically, but it’s okay because I went straight to Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and renewed my license, giving me another five years and a bit of breathing space. I had to sit my theory again, but that’s fine, I am confident with that bit!

As I explained in my last motorbike test based poist, I’ve got a Learner license, but I really want the Restricted license. My current license will run out of the 5th January next year so if i want the Restricted license I have to pass the test before then.

Anyway, just as last time, I started the day really stressed. I was very nervous and this causes me to mess up and fail. It’s incredibly frustrating.

The test itself for the most part was fine.

There was a slight issue with the confirmation email getting to me (as in it didn’t), so i didn’t recieve any instructions about how early to get there or what to bring. Thankfully I remembered from last time and brought my own headphones.

Anyway, the first part of the test was okay, I rode around the Avalon area of Lower Hutt, turning into little side streets, turning the bike around and just really plodding around on the bike. Then came the highway. The Lower Hutt motorbike test has a section where you have to ride out from a static stop, across to the right and ride up the highway.

This stresses me out because:

  • You have to go from 0 Kph across two lanes of the higway.
  • The traffic is very fast (100+ Kph).
  • When you turn right onto the bit of highway you need to be on, that traffic is also very fast (100+ Kph).
  • There is not a lot of space for error.
  • It’s a fairly exposed and windy section of the highway.

Needless to say that stress (and the wind) got the better of me and I failed.
