Fiji

As a treat to ourselves, and because James turned 40, we took a post-Christmas trip to Fiji.

We flew in and stayed one night in a little hotel near to the airport. As the flight landed reasonably late, we thought it would be better to do this than have to rush about trying to find our feet AND get to the boat terminal in one evening.

Once we’d dumped our bags we went for the obligatory first holiday cocktail and then for some food. The hotel had the usual bar food type meals, and up the road a short walk we found a really nice Mexican/fusion place that sold a nice variety of things to keep us fed. It was a nice first evening.

The next day we got our shuttle bus to Port Denerau and then got on a boat to get to the Island.

We stayed in the Mamanucas , on Malolo island. The resort was called Tropica and it was adult only. I have to say, i’m now spoilt and will never opt to stay anywhere without it being adult only/child free…

It was amazing!

Our liuttle bungalow hut was basic, but what do you need on an all inclusive getaway in the Pacific?! There was a salt treated swimming pool right next to the actual sea…so that was lovely. The restaurant doubled up as the bar, the lounge and anything else that we could have wanted.

Here are some photos of our time on the island…I’ll begin with the sunny photos! I think these look like the quintessential ‘Pacific Holiday’ photos!

Although we did get sunshine, most of the holiday was rainy. I don’t mean drizzle and a light breeze, I mean rainy-season-typhoon-wet-all-of-the-time rain. But that is okay because we wanted a restful holiday and we got a lot of rest in. I read a total of three books and started another! It was a good job that I had my trusty Agatha Christie novels with me on my kindle.

Anyway, here are some photos of the rain:

Despite the rain, we did get to kayak out to the little island about 1-2km away from the shore, we snorkelled around the shoreline, and we did a bit of swimming. I did get a few hours of sunbathing. We also took a boat trip out with a few of the other guests to a place called the Garden Reef. That was lovely.

I would say that the coral around our bay was very similar in type and colour to that at the Garden Reef, but the Garden Reef was HUGE. It was really cool to swim over the coral and see all of the tiny (and some no so tiny) fish below us.

We spent five nights on the island and then stayed on the main land for three more.
We stayed at the Raddison Blu, which as a hotel was lovely. There is a huge sort of landscaped pool, with a pool side bar looking out over it. It has an adults only pool and a quiet space for when the need takes you. The staff are just so lovely and always greet you with a smile.

We took a few day trips around the island, venturing on the bus to Nadi and to Lautoka. Both were very interesting to visit and get a picture of the ‘real’ Fiji.
