Things I am loving this last few weeks:
- Tri Squad supported sessions
- Easter

Tri Squad supported sessions
Throughout April, i’ve taken part in three TriSquad supported sessions. I’m hoping that each session i’m improving, but as this is the first proper month of me training, i’m not expecting to see much improvement or change other than it not feeling so hard. I don’t know; maybe I’ll improve quicker, maybe not, either way it’s fun and i’m enjoying myself.
Session 1: 2nd April
The session was supposed to be Swim-Bike-Run, but Petone beach was categorised as ‘unsuitable for swimming’. This means that there is a high health risk, and that the water quality is unlikely to be safe enough to meet the national water quality guidelines for swimming (LAWA, 2023).
This meant that instead, the session was Run-Bike-Run. So I completed a 1km run, then got straight onto the bike and rode about 17km, then went straight into a 5km run.
The road biking is still my weakest skill – but I think I did well. The route planned was 21km, but as I was a little reluctant to get onto the Highway, I did a slightly shorter, adapted route that was just over 17km and through town, away from the Highway. I just need to keep practicing on my bike and getting familiar with the brakes etc.
The 5km run wasn’t too bad. I mean it was still a 5km run, but I didn’t feel like it was as much of a struggle as normal. I ended up with a time comparable to if i was just running a ParkRun, so that’s not too bad.
Session 2: 16th April
The session was supposed to be Swim-Bike-Run, but the coach gave me an easy out and told me to ‘…focus on my running and cycling…’ (I had had my first swimming lesson with the group the Friday before and that was a bit of a failure because I am very bad at swimming…so I think he wanted me to not drown on Petone beach)
This meant that instead, the session was Run-Bike-Run, with the bike section being reps up a BIG hill…so I completed a 3km run, then got straight onto the bike and rode about 6km, then went straight into a 5km run.
The road biking is still my weakest skill – but I think I did well. The hill reps were from the bottom right up to the school, about 2 ish km uphill. The first one was awful, but once i’d scoped out the route it actually wasn’t too bad on the second time up. To be honest the downhill was worse. I’m still not quite used to the angle that i’m positioned going downhill, it’s killer on the wrists.
The 5km run wasn’t too bad again. I just need to get into the swing of getting off a bike and straight into a run. It’s torture! Why did I think it was a good idea?
Session 3: 30th April
This session was a mini triathlon relay!
This means that we were put into teams of three and we completed three mini triathlons as a team, so in each triathlon we did a different leg…so I did the swim in the first one, the cycle in the second and the run in the third
As I hadn’t brought my wetsuit, I had to go swimming in just my costume. It was COLD!
Overall though the session was great fun!
Easter
This year, as every year, we were at our friend’s house for Easter. It’s always a nice time and we have a lot of food!
It was quite chilled this year, with butter boards and the most amazing breads! A thoroughly lovely day all round ๐
