Things I am loving this month: August

Things I am loving this last few weeks:

  • Taupo Marathon [10km]
  • Rawlinsons Mid-Winter event in Wairarapa
  • Change Fitness annual run

Taupo Marathon
This is an event that I have never taken part in, so James and I decided to give it a go. As we’re deep into training for the IronMan events, it’s probably a good idea to go for as many races and events as we can. We chose to do the 10km race.

Taking the Friday off work, we drove up to Taupo and settled in, collecting our race packs and having a look around the sponsor stalls, then going for dinner in Portofino. It was lovely, but I quickly learnt a lesson – the night before race day, make your own food!

I spent the evening quite unwell and the race day feeling awful…so a lesson learnt the hard way!

Anyway, despite the dodgy tummy and the lack of enthusiasm, I actually ran my fastest 10km yet! I hour and 6 minutes. So I was doing something right!

Rawlinsons Mid-Winter event in the Wairarapa
James works for a company that organise a mid-winter event. This year it was food and wineries in the Wairarapa. We went over in the morning, dropped our things at the lovely chalets that had been booked for us and then went off for lunch and wine at Poppies. Poppies is my favourite wine in the region and it didn’t fail to impress.

Next we wondered down to another winery for a sample tray of four wines. We could choose from their normal tray of two reds and two whites, or one red, one rose and two whites (i went for the latter, i’m not a red wine fan). Finally we ventured to a Gin bar to taste the offerings there. This was really nice, I had four gin samplers, all really fruity and sweet.

At this point I was feeling the alcohol, so it was very well timed that we went back to the chalets and got ready for dinner!

Change Fitness annual run
Every year Change Fitness organises a fun run. They usually get people doing either 5km, 10km, or a half marathon (21km), but this year people only wanted to do the 10km, so it was just a 10km race.

I was supposed to take part, but unfortunately I injured my leg, so i took photos of people as they passed me at the 5km mark.

The weather was wild (which is why i think less people were there) so it was fun to dodge the little bits of rain and the wind.
