Bollywood Dance Evening

This week at Guides, we hired a lovely lady called Tina to come and teach us some Bollywood dance moves.

It was a lovely evening. To begin with she had taken all of the girls names and written them in Punjabi, they then copied them out and were allowed to take them away with them. We all got bindis (the small coloured, gem filled pieces of decoration that sit between the eyebrows). I went for a round yellow one.

Next we learnt a little about Bollywood and what it is: Bollywood is sort of like the Indian version of Hollywood, only they produce more films per year. Roughly 100 ish films are made each year in Hollywood, in Bollywood it’s into the 1000’s! I thought that this was really interesting. In Bollywood films the leading lady is usually in about 5 or 6 songs, and in these songs they will change their outfits at least six times…how busy!

We then learnt a dance that involved ‘Padma Hands’ -where you fan your fingers in towards your body as you are doing your moves (sort of like the Indian version of ‘Spirit Fingers’) and loads of different hand and leg movements. I found this amazingly fun and totally energetic…we even got to dress up in Sari’s!!!
